Music
As boys voices break in early adolescence only a small number of Grammar school students are boy choristers. Some students do return to the cathedral choir in later years. Others become servers in the cathedral. As is the case historically, music still forms and important part of the ethos of the school.
Throughout the junior cycle all students have a singing class every week with our music teacher, Mr Dexter. Also, they all study music in form one and have the option to continue the subject to first Junior and then Leaving Certificate. Those that don’t study music as a subject may join one of the extracurricular choirs.
The cathedral girls’ choir which participates regularly in cathedral services is very popular. The girls practise on Wednesday afternoons under the direction of Mr Leigh. On Wednesday, lunch is provided free of charge to the girls.
Students are encouraged to perform at every opportunity and both the Christmas Carol service and the 'end of year' service delight with their solo and choral performances. Our pupils have frequently won awards at the Wesley College Dublin, music festival.
Many students continue to study music at third level both nationally and internationally.
